Best & Worst at the 2011 Emmys
Best: Yes, Aubrey Plaza wears white a lot but at least she knows what works for her. Not only did this dress look great but her hair and makeup were beautiful too. Hatler tops have a tendency to make women look too broad (see: Jane Lynch) but not on her. I also love the double bangles that gave her a modern Wonder Woman vibe. Kristen Wiig was someone I was waiting to see what they would wear and she didn’t disappoint. The ombre effect of this brown dress (a very unconventional color choice) was so pretty and the cut gave her super slender frame more sex appeal. Evan Rachel Wood wore my favorite black dress of the night. Here’s a girl who knows the power of simplicity. The slightly padded shoulder and full-sequins added the perfect amount of interest to keep it from being boring. (Ahem, Gretchen Mol.) And in the battle of the red dresses, I give first place to Nina Dobrev. Great fit, great color, great everything… doesn’t even matter that I have no idea who you are.
Honorary mentions:
Kudos to Amy Poehler for wearing a dress that has never been worn before. Julie Bowen and Kristen Wiig should share clothes because they both have a similar body type and know how to dress it. Jennifer Carptenter looked downtown-cool in a dress reminiscent of Kate Moss’ wedding gown. And good for Claire Danes for going the trendy route without blowing it.
Worst: Let me explain! Yes, Sofia Vergara looked completely stunning, I’m just so confused about that gold bracelet. I wish so much that her stylist had stopped accessorizing her after the silver/emerald earrings and ring because she would have been best dressed if it weren’t for the damned cuff. It makes no sense to throw in a huge piece of gold jewelry! Three is a crowd and the bracelet needs to leave. In case you forgot for a second that Gweneth Paltrow is cool and trendy, she was there to remind you in a lace, midriff-baring number. I could’ve gone without seeing that and I guess I don’t really understand why she was considered relevant enough to present an award. Heidi Klum’s dress wasn’t terrible on her but the texture looked too much like weird white coral for me to like it. I don’t love her colorful costume jewelry either. Plus, Seal looks like an asshole with sunglasses on and his shirt unbuttoned. Lastly… I’m really upset about this. The Emmy-tones singing group was cute but why did the wardrobe department insist on putting all of the ladies in same dress? Not only do they look like miserable bridesmaids but it was totally unfair to pin Kate Flannery against two girls 1/2 her age. This dress was far too young and too short for her. For shame, wardrobe department. Her red carpet look was so much better.
Not-so-Honorary mentions:
Julia Stiles looked great except that her lilac dress was too similar to the one Mila Kunis wore at the Oscars. Who knows why Eva La Rue’s dress had built-in armor. Padma Lakshmi… nothing like looking like an Emmy Award at the Emmy Awards. And dear god Paz de la Huerta needs to fire her hair and makeup artists immediately.
