2012 Trend Forecasting

Over the past few seasons I’ve noticed fashion moving toward more conservative and practical style. Perhaps as a result of the shit economy and people returning to minimalistic lifestyles, fashion has adapted. No one wants to show off their expensive goods anymore because it just makes you look like a douche. For me at least, I think 2012 will be a year of comfortable, high-quality basics and straying away from quirky trends. Here are my trend predictions (aka things I plan to like) for 2012.

OUT: PLATFORM HEELS | IN: FLATS

The jig is up for daytime towering pumps. Can all of us women just come together and admit they’re uncomfortable? I’m sick of hearing girls tell me about how “surprisngly comfortable” their 6” heels are. You’re a liar! Not saying I won’t wear heels at night time but as far as the work day is concerned, I’m returning to my ol’ faithful- the flat. They’re more demure, more comfortable and better for your feet. Done.

OUT: RAZOR SHARP HAIR | IN: SOFT & POLISHED RETRO

Asymmetrical, new wave haircuts are moving out to make room for glamorous, 50’s-style waves coming in. Even if your hair is straight, the key is in keeping it polished and perfectly coifed. Messy, bed head is done with for a while so it’s time to start setting your alarm earlier and putting some effort into your hairstyle. In future news: I am late for work!

OUT: SKINNY JEANS | IN: TROUSERS

It’s going to be hard for me to come out of my skinny, pull-on jeans and into real pants with flies but the time has come. As a natural progression after rainbow colored denim, printed trousers are especially welcome.

OUT: SMOKEY EYES | IN: CLEAN & SIMPLE BEAUTY

Sorry (read: not sorry) but the Urban Decay Naked palette needs to be gone. I LOVE all kinds of makeup but I never got into eyeshaddow so I certainly don’t like it in a gradient using 10 shades of bronze. I hope to see more girls celebrating their natural beauty in 2012 with just a little bit of eyeliner and mascara.

OUT: TRICKED-OUT HOBOS | IN: TOTES

If this year’s focus is to be minimalism and practicality, it only makes sense for tote bags to shine. They’re big enough to hold all of your stuff and without any bells and whistles, they make you look classy, smart and sensible.
